The Awakening

April 30th - June 13th

Armstrong Gallery

As Michigan’s winter yields to spring, the landscape transforms into a dazzling display of new life—a shift that serves as the heart of artist Andrea Rich’s work. Based in Zeeland, Rich uses a bold, impressionist style and oil on canvas to capture the state’s vibrant coastlines and woodlands. Her mission is simple: to bring joy through her art and inspire others to follow their dreams. A two-time Top 20 Finalist in the First Bloem Art Competition and a frequent exhibitor with the Ottawa County Art Trust, Rich continues to grow her presence in the local art scene. This summer, she will serve as the Maker-in-Residence at Herrick District Library while continuing to paint at her home studio and The Galleria in Holland. When she isn't at her easel, she finds balance gardening, visiting the beach, and enjoying life with her family.

Reception: May 21st, 5:30 - 7:00 pm

Meditations on the Memory of Flowers

April 30 - June 20

Padnos Gallery

Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Benjamin Boss is an artist and librarian at Kendall College of Art & Design whose work is a vibrant intersection of academic history and natural wonder. His gestural, intuitive style is deeply informed by the thousands of art books he manages and the legacies of masters like Joan Mitchell, Cy Twombly, and Claude Monet. In his exhibit, Meditations on the Memory of Flowers, Boss uses painterly abstraction and vivid color to explore a spectrum of emotions—from awe and joy to peace and longing. For Boss, nature is the primary vessel for experiencing divine beauty, and his paintings serve as a dialogue with that transcendence. Inspired by his flower garden and the shores of Lake Michigan, his work acts as an ode to the fleeting essence of springtime and the temporality of life. This evocative approach to color and memory has earned him a place in private collections across North America and features in prestigious publications like World of Interiors and Vanity Fair (UK).

Reception: May 21st, 5:30 - 7:00 pm

LightWave

Armstrong Gallery

To Theresa Gray, art was never a decision, but a way of moving through the world—a lifelong journey that began in the stillness of a Michigan convent and evolved through a transformative moment at the Parsons School of Design, where a single line redirected her life toward fine art. Throughout thirty years of building a career that balanced survival with creativity, today she lives off the grid near Taos with her husband, Peter Halter. Theresa exists in a state of constant creation where she is "always painting," even when the brush is not in her hand. Her work is a deep, whole-body awareness rooted in the act of being present; as she gathers wood or observes the mundane beauty of her surroundings, she absorbs the light, shadow, and the intensity of life and death, only to let it emerge later through her hands in a balanced exchange of strength and ease. An experimental artist who risks the security of commercialism for the sake of authenticity, she moves fluidly between assemblages of found objects and spacious field drawings, using art as the thread that connects her joys and challenges.

As You See It

February 26th - April 11th

Lievense Zobkiw Gallery

Reception: March 26th, 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Based in Pittsburgh, Phoenix is a multidisciplinary emerging artist whose work sits at the vital intersection of studio art and psychological inquiry. A 2025 graduate of Hope College and a recipient of the Jon F. Kay Award for Excellence in the Arts, she is currently advancing her expertise through a Master of Arts in Art Therapy at Seton Hill University. Her practice invites viewers to engage with abstraction as a reflective, emotional landscape where meaning is co-created rather than prescribed. Drawing from projective and phenomenological theories, Phoenix utilizes powerful colors and intentionally ambiguous forms to act as containers for complex emotional material, allowing viewers to project their own memories and lived experiences into the work. Ultimately, her paintings serve as a catalyst for healing and connection, functioning as a mirror that reveals a deeper awareness of the self. When she is not in the studio or sharing her process with her online community, Phoenix finds balance spending time with family, friends, and her two cats.

Bob Ashley

Padnos Gallery

Reception: December 4th, 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

For Bob Ashley, being a fine artist means constantly seeking new avenues for expression, never limiting himself to a single medium. This lifelong search for creative storytelling led him to animation and illustration, proving that "Animation is art too!" Sixty years ago, Bob's professional journey began after graduating from Kendall School of Art and Design, leading to work as an illustrator in Grand Rapids and later at Hallmark Cards. While there, he honed skills in various art forms and freelanced, eventually starting his own creative studio. Missing Michigan, he returned to build the career he cherishes today, continually illustrating, painting, and cartooning daily.

Bob's latest endeavor is a cartoon-style story promoting inclusivity. He uses multi-colored, diverse alien children to show that despite our different sizes, shapes, and colors, we are fundamentally alike. In this story, the aliens finish rebuilding an asteroid and decide to visit Earth—"that little blue planet." Their crash-landing at an Earth picnic is a catalyst for discovery, as they realize the human children are just as wonderfully diverse as they are. The learning and growth begin here, driven by a deep commitment to sharing positive, influential art. It’s a wonderful life!

ARTIST TALK- The Beauty in the Ordinary: Pastel Paintings by Jim McMillan, Helen Kleczynski and Thomas Tomasek

Padnos and Armstrong Galleries

Often we pass by a subject that is considered “Ordinary”. Michigan artists Jim McMillan, Helen Kleczynski and Thomas Tomasek took time to look more closely at their surroundings and found “Beauty” in ordinary subjects, both in their travels and just down the street. Their paintings incorporate dramatic patterns of light and shadow, abstract shapes, poetic colors and interesting textures that transform ordinary subjects into inspired works of art.
