He will give the morning keynote address which will open the conference at the Jack H. Miller Center. Following the keynote, Dean Dworkin will facilitate a breakout session hosted at the Arts Council focusing on diversity and inclusion in the arts. Hope College Brown Bag Lunch Series
![]() April 10
12-1 p.m. Founded in 2008 and directed by Hope College piano professor Dr. Andrew Le (Drew), Brown Bag has rapidly become one of the most popular and innovative music events in the Holland area. Built on the premise that classical music should be accessible by all, the series presents classical art music in a setting that is completely free of pretense: performers are required to wear jeans and talk to the audience about their selections, people of all ages are encouraged to come and go as they please, and everyone is encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch and make as much or as little noise as they wish. Light beverages are also served. The free Brown Bag concerts happen every month of the academic year at the beautiful Holland Area Arts Council from 12-1 p.m. Each hour-long program consists of a wide variety of musical offerings primarily from Hope students, faculty, and staff. ![]() Embody Art

Viva la Vida! 2014![]() ![]() Soy Wax Batik
Wednesday, October 1 6:30 p.m. The Lakeshore Fiber Arts Guild presents “Soy Wax Batik” on Wed., Oct. 1, with Priscilla Lynch and Jennifer Gould at the Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St., Holland, MI 49423, starting at 6:30pm. The door opens at 6pm. Nonmembers are asked to pay $5 toward speaker’s fees. Please check out the guild’s blog (see below) for specifics on materials and fees. Batik is an ancient technique in which hot wax is stamped onto fabric to create a patterned resist so that the fabric below the wax remains uncolored when dye/paint is put on the unwaxed areas of the fabric. Soy wax was developed as an environmentally friendly alternative and easier to use than traditional batik wax. Guild members Priscilla Lynch and Jennifer Gould will share their experiments with this technique, demonstrate and then participants will be able to try waxing and painting a small piece of fabric. Through September 14 At the Richard App Gallery in Grand Rapids Revolution/Evolution is an all photography based exhibit with works by Cuban artist Roberto Salas and Ann Arbor based photographer Jack Kenny. This show contains iconic photos from the 50's and 60's from Cuba by Salas as well as shots from Havana and outlying areas. Many of the photos by Salas are from a tumultuous time in history that are placed next to the work by Kenny whose work gives an inside view to a land that is very close geographically but has been shrouded in mystery over the last 50 years. The black and white coloring connects the contrasting styles of the two photographers and brings the two eras closer together. The works will be on hand and available for sale. This is a free admission and open to public. Richard App Gallery 910 Cherry St SE Grand Rapids Michigan 616.458.4226 richardappgallery@gmail.com ![]() Community Arts Award
